Can I fit a roof rack or rooftop tent?

Check the complete load

Ask the vehicle and rack manufacturers about the mounting arrangement and limits while driving and parked. Include the rack, tent and other equipment. Have the installer explain fastener checks and travel securing. A tent's advertised capacity is not the vehicle's roof rating.

Check alterations separately

Section 52 matters where installation alters registered particulars. Ask the registering authority about the fitment, especially if it involves structural work. Do not assume a removable product is automatically exempt from equipment or loading requirements.

Plan the stop

Record the travel height and ask the insurer about fitted equipment. Use a campsite or obtain permission from the responsible land manager, checking overnight-stay restrictions separately. Travel with the tent secured and unoccupied; open it only when parked in a suitable, permitted place.

• Does this mounting arrangement require approval?
• What limits apply to the vehicle, rack and total load?
• Does the location permit parking and camping?
